MMARP Day Two: Deputy Health Minister Visits Adansi North District Hospital to Assess Maternal Health Services

As part of the government’s renewed efforts to reduce maternal mortality and strengthen healthcare delivery, Deputy Minister for Health, Hon. Prof. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has visited the Adansi North District Hospital at Fomena on the second day of the Maternal Mortality Action and Response Programme (MMARP).

The hospital, which was financed and constructed under the previous administration of President John Dramani Mahama, formed part of the Deputy Minister’s ongoing assessment of health facilities and maternal healthcare services.

Led by the Medical Superintendent, Dr. Abena Yawson, the delegation toured key areas of the facility, including the Labour Ward, Outpatient Department (OPD) and other critical units, to assess service delivery and identify challenges requiring attention.

Adertisement

The visit also provided an opportunity for the Deputy Minister to engage directly with patients, health professionals and other frontline workers. Their experiences and personal accounts highlighted both the challenges confronting the health sector and the resilience, hope and courage of patients and healthcare workers.

The engagements underscored the importance of placing people at the centre of government’s health policies and investments, particularly in efforts to improve maternal and reproductive healthcare outcomes.

The management of the hospital is also pursuing plans to establish a dedicated facility focusing on maternal health and fertility. The proposed facility is expected to position the hospital as a centre of excellence for fertility and maternal care, providing specialised services to women and families within the region and beyond.

The development forms part of broader efforts to expand access to quality maternal healthcare and address challenges that contribute to preventable maternal deaths.

The government, under President John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Ghana’s health system and ensuring that women have access to timely, quality and affordable care throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.

Adertisement

The MMARP continues to serve as an important platform for identifying gaps in maternal healthcare delivery, engaging frontline health workers and communities, and developing practical interventions to accelerate the reduction of maternal deaths across the country.

The overarching objective remains clear: to build a health system where every woman can receive the care she needs and no woman loses her life while giving life.
