GH¢20m No-Go: Government Refuses MTN Donation for SA Attack Victims

Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it “respectfully declines” the offer while commending the company

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has turned down a GH¢20 million donation from MTN Ghana intended for Ghanaian victims of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

In a statement issued in Accra on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said that while the government commended MTN for the gesture, it was unable to accept the offer.

“The Government of Ghana commends MTN for the offer, however, we respectfully decline,” the statement said.

The statement followed media reports suggesting that MTN Ghana — a subsidiary of the South African-owned MTN Group operating in the country — was preparing to donate the amount to support the victims. The publications attributed the announcement to an interview granted by the MTN Board Chairman, Dr Ishmael Yamson.
