‘Made in Burkina Faso’ – Traoré Unveils New Military Uniforms Woven from Traditional Local Fabric

Burkina Faso’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has unveiled new military uniforms crafted from locally woven Burkinabè fabric, in his latest push to reduce dependence on foreign imports and assert national sovereignty.

The uniforms made their debut during the graduation ceremony of the 25th class of Active-Duty Officer Cadets at the Georges-Namoano Military Academy, where 218 newly commissioned officers marched in attire inspired by the traditional Cencengu fabric of the Gulmu region in eastern Burkina Faso.

A Statement of Sovereignty
Since seizing power in 2022, Traoré has made self-reliance a cornerstone of his administration, championing policies that prioritise local production and African identity over foreign dependency. The new military uniforms are the latest symbol of that vision.

According to the government, the uniforms celebrate the craftsmanship of Burkinabè weavers while projecting the country’s rich cultural heritage through one of its most visible institutions — the armed forces.

Beyond Security: A Broader Vision
The move goes beyond aesthetics. It is the latest in a series of steps aimed at entrenching the use of locally made products across state institutions, from the civil service to the military. Traoré’s administration has framed the initiative as part of a broader strategy to strengthen national sovereignty — not only through security reforms and military resilience but also through economic and cultural independence.

As Burkina Faso continues to battle a protracted security crisis, the sight of its officers marching in fabric woven by local hands sends a powerful message: that the country’s defence, like its identity, is rooted in its own soil.
